Google to now show you TikTok, Instagram and other short videos – Latest News

Google is reportedly testing a new feature that will show TikTok, Instagram and other short videos in its carousel. This means that rather than opening individual apps to watch short videos, one will be able to watch them in the Google search results. As reported by TechCrunch, the move ‘could help the company retain users in search of social video entertainment from fully leaving Google’s platform’.

Carousel of short videos was first spotted earlier this year within Google Discover. The personalised feed is found on the Google mobile app and to the left of the home screen on Android phones. The short video carousel was then available to select Android users. The feature collated videos from platforms like YouTube, Indian TikTok rival Trell and Google’s own Tangi.

Expansion of the feature to include Instagram and TikTok videos was first spotted by Search Engine Roundtable via Brian Freiesleben’s tweet. The feature was accessible when one searched for “packers” in the Google app.

The TechCrunch report clarifies that this “Short Videos” carousel is different from Google’s Stories. Previously known as ‘AMP Stories’, the Stories feature was introduced in October 2020 to the Google Search app. It is available to both iOS and Android running devices and consists of short-form videos. The content is usually created by Google’s online publishing partners like Forbes, USA Today and others.
