Get the basics right and what you need
As basic as it may sound, you will need to shut down your laptop and remove the power adapter as well before you begin the cleaning. Here are a couple of things that you will need to wipe that laptop clean from the outside:
- A microfiber or lint-free piece of cloth
What you should not use
Aerosol sprays, solvents, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide
How to clean the exterior of the laptop
Take a piece of microfibre cloth — it is easily available — and make it slightly damp with water. Slowly scrub the exterior and the bottom of the laptop. It’s the sides where you really have to be careful, so ensure that the cloth isn’t too wet. No liquid should go inside any of the ports that are around the laptop.
How to clean the screen of the laptop
The screen is a bit delicate and perhaps needs the most cleaning. Before using a damp cloth, get a piece of dry cloth and wipe the screen gently from corner to corner. Then, take the cloth and dip it in some water. Do keep in mind that no sort of cleaning solution should be used for cleaning the screen of your laptop. Plain water is good enough but ensure that it’s slightly damp and not overly wet. Just be gentle with the wiping process and don’t overdo it with too much force as it can cause some damage to the screen.
How to clean the laptop keyboard
Working from home means that there are times when you are munching on some snacks while working on the laptop. So there ought to be some crumbs that might get stuck in the hinge or somewhere between the keys. Or your pet is sitting around and might just shed a hair or two around it. The keyboards are tricky to clean.
First the crumbs (if there are any). A simple trick is to take a straw and slowly blow air wherever you might spot them. This you must do before actually cleaning the keyboard.
If there are stains on the keyboard, then isopropyl alcohol might come in handy. Take a damp cloth and wipe the keyboard slowly. Then take the earbuds and get in between the keys to properly clean the keyboard. As always, make sure that the cloth you are using isn’t too wet.
