In a short period, AirPods have managed to revolutionize the way that people listen to music. And with the AirPods Pro, Apple has improved many of the original model’s shortcomings.
The bad news is that, even with all the improvements that they’ve made, Apple hasn’t made it any easier to keep track of your case or prevent it from breaking. Our team has, however: We’ve found a few ways for you to replace a broken or lost AirPod or charging case.
At $199 a pair for the second-gen AirPods with wireless charging, and $249 a pair for the AirPods Pro, these buds aren’t the cheapest way to go fully wireless, but they might be the easiest and they’re certainly the most popular. With a pairing procedure that’s effortless and wireless connectivity that’s highly reliable, you can easily spend just as much on a set that won’t work quite as well — so it’s not difficult to see why people are flocking to them.
Price aside, managing several accessories at once can be tough, especially when you consider the AirPods require three individual pieces in order to function properly. After all, the possibility of losing one or all of these is certainly greater than losing a single pair of wired earbuds. And if you do lose them, how much is Apple charging to replace the AirPods/Pros and their accompanying case? Here’s what you’re looking at:
- Individual AirPods (2nd gen): $69 each
- AirPods charging case: $59
- AirPods wireless charging case: $69
- Individual AirPods Pro: $89 each
- AirPods Pro wireless charging case: $89
Steps to replace
Start by making sure that you are signed in to your Apple account with the right ID. Then navigate to this Apple support page for damaged AirPods.
Once here, choose Lost or Missing AirPods to open up an additional menu screen.
On this screen, you can choose to replace lost AirPods, or replace the charge case, or even replace AirPods Pro ear tips. Choose which is closest to your situation. For now, let’s assume you want to replace a single AirPod and go with that option.
Since we are only missing one AirPod, we choose One on the next section.
Now you have a number of actions you can take. A clear place to start is Order a Replacement. But sometimes AirPods aren’t available for this option for some reason. This is why a more reliable choice may be to Order a Replacement via Chat with an Advisor, where you can be very specific about what you want. Apple also lets you give your details to Support for a later call, or can instruct you how to order an AirPod from an Apple Store.
Note these steps aren’t strictly necessary to get your new AirPod, but we like them because it lays the options out very clearly for newcomers and directly links you with the help you need.
What if you still have all of the parts, but something’s not working correctly? Thankfully, Apple’s AirPods and AirPods Pro are protected by a one-year warranty. Service for any AirPods with diminished battery capacity within this time frame will be free. Battery maintenance that falls outside this one-year warranty period will run you $49 for each Pod, totaling $98 for the pair, and $49 for the charging case.
Replacing under AppleCare+
If you’re the kind of person who really values peace of mind, subscribing to Apple’s AppleCare+ means that replacement part fees are capped and some repairs are covered under the plan. With an AppleCare+ plan, your new replacement fees are:
- AirPods Pro: $29
- Charge Case for AirPods Pro: $29
- AirPods: $29
- Charging Case: $29
- Wireless Charge Case: $29
Pretty simple! Everything goes down to $29 if your AppleCare+ warranty is still in effect. When it comes to repairing the damage instead of replacing it, it looks like Apple’s latest AppleCare+ deal (recently updated) covers two cases of accidental damage over any period of 12 months (down from 24), which means you get four available repairs for the standard coverage period of two years. If one of your AirPods stops working instead of being entirely lost, it may be worthwhile to use this AppleCare+ deal to try and get them fixed if all your other Apple devices are in good health.
Contacting Apple Support
You can also contact Apple Support, though you will need to know the serial number for your product. This is the best option if you do not live relatively close to an Apple Store. You can also use Apple Support in tandem with Apple’s Express Replacement policy for added convenience. First contact Apple Support, which will help you determine whether your product is still covered under warranty. If you’re eligible, Apple will ship a replacement AirPod or AirPod case to a designated location of your choosing. You’ll just need to mail the defective product to Apple within 10 days of Apple’s shipping date.
